Characteristics of a Championship Quarterback

I was able to see Mike Canales speak at the 2012 Dallas Glazier Clinic. Coach Canales is the Offensive Coordinator at The University of North Texas. He was the first coach hired at North Texas under new Head Coach Dan McCarney. Mike Canales was previously the OC at South Florida under Jim Leavitts original staff at South Florida. Prior to South Florida he was at Arizona, NY Jets, and was Phillip Rivers QB coach at NC State.

Coach Canales was easily the best speaker I have been around for Quarterback material at a Glazier Clinic

Coach Canales Characteristics of a Championship QB
  • Mentally and Physically Tough
    • Alex Smith was his example here because of Smith having a different OC every year he has been in the league
  • Intelligence - Great Decision Maker
  • Competitive Excellence
    • Aaron Rodgers - To have the patients Rodgers had through out his time as Brett Favre backup and all of the drama - He has definitely taken advantage of his time as the starter.
  • Leadership - "Action Speak Louder than Words"
    • Drew Brees
  • The "IT" Factor
  • Mobility
  • Ability to Make Plays
  • Arm Strength - "Its all about anticipation and timing - not throwing the ball 70 yards"
  • WINNER
Core Values of the North Texas Quarterback
  • Our objective is to put our team in a position to win, showing great leadership in times of adversity and displaying character to win.
