Sonny Dykes General Football Philosophy

Dallas Glazier 2012

General Philosophy
  • Unselfishness
    • This has to be universal through out your locker room - Players, Coaches, Trainer, Managers, Video Staff - anyone that has contact with your program must have this personality.
  • Morale - "Lucky to be Together"
    • Jim Harbaugh - "Who has it better than us? - Nobody!"
  • Accountable - Grows leadership and toughness throughout your clubhouse
  • Must be open lines of Communication between Coaches and Players.
    • Players have to know they can trust you. You are there for the betterment of them not just football.
  • Trust between Staff - Coach / Players
Personnel
  • What do you have?
    • Must make system fit the players in your organization - especially at the High School Level where you cannot recruit.
  • How can you win?
    • Eliminate opportunities to give players the chance to make bad decisions.
    • The more your players have to think - The better chance they have of making mistakes. You want your guys reacting and playing NOT thinking.
  • Quarterback
    • Has to be able to handle the Mental part of the game. You can control the Physical part by play calls.
  • Skill Players
    • Scheme for exceptional Players to touch the football often.
    • Spread out the touches for your Average Players
  • Lineman
    • Power and Lead for your Size Lineman
    • Misdirection for your Smaller Lineman
Building an Offense
  • Have a TE - Use them!
    • TE will force defenses to call strength.
    • TE empty and throw screens - TE on corner for bubbles will give you a size advantage
  • QB run game is a Great Equalizer
    • Zone Read, QB Power
    • Forces the Defense to account for the QB - Now your back to playing 11 on 11. If you do not run your QB the defense somewhere on the field can out number you - 10 on 11.
  • Tempo - Tempo - Tempo
    • The faster you play - The simpler you can be as an offense and play caller.
    • The faster you play - You will keep a defense in basic alignment 90% of the time.
  • Drills must match YOUR Philosophy
  • Screen and Cut often to Neutralize D-Line
    • If you are over matched up front - These two options are a must to cast doubt into the Defensive Lineman as they play. Now they are thinking instead of reacting, which will now give you the advantage.
